This wine-red brocade corset is the kind of costume worn in operas set in the nineteenth century, such as Carmen or La Traviata.
A corset does more than shape the figure: it changes how a singer stands and breathes on stage.
Each costume goes through dozens of performances and is altered for every new singer.
Notice the metal hooks and the chains on either side.
