This sketch by Léon Bakst was made for Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird, performed by the Ballets Russes.
Bakst used gold leaf and saturated colours so that the costume would seem to blaze under the stage lights.
A costume sketch is the bridge between the designer’s idea and the tailor’s hands.
The museum digitises sketches so the costume workshop can consult them when a production is revived.
